3.9.3. Managing Your Menu
To access the Menu Manager, click the Site Content icon on the main menu bar. From the site content screen, select Menu Manager and the main Menu Manager screen will open.
From here you can
- Add, delete or edit the menu items for your website
- Change the order in which they appear by moving them up or down the menu tree, and.
- Add, edit or delete sub menus for each menu item if you choose.
(Note: please confirm you're your website designer that your website design supports sub menus before adding them. If your design does not support sub menus, any sub- menus added using the Menu Manager will not be visible on your site.)
When you open the Menu Manager, the default menu selected will be Main Menu. For your convenience, Bistro pre-loads a number of common menu items, but you are free to rename, add or delete menu items to meet your needs.
To move through the menu structure, use the Menu: drop down list where you can navigate by selecting existing menu and sub menu items. To select a menu, click on its name in the drop down list.
3.9.3.1 Adding a Menu Item
To add a menu item, first select (by clicking on it in the the drop down list) a menu heading (eg. Main Menu) to which you would like to add your new item. The menu you have selected will appear in the text box beside the word Menu: and any existing menu items will be shown in the text box below. If no menu items have been created yet, the box will be emtpy until you add the first item on the selected menu.
To add an item to the selected menu, click [New] (near the top right side of your menu manager screen, below the Bistro menu bar. This will open up the Menu Item Details box to the right of the menu list (see below).
Here you will choose (from the drop down list provided) the page that you want your new menu item to link to and name it accordingly.
- All Bistro items and/or pages that you can link to directly, including pages that you create in Page Manager, will appear in this drop down list.
- When you select a page from the list, the text fields directly below the drop down list will auto-fill with the appropriate linking information.
- The name of a menu item will default to the existing page or item title.
- You can change the name of the menu item (how it appears on the site menu) by typing directly into the Text: area.
- You can also link a menu item to a page that does not exist on your own website by completing the appropriate URL: information manually.
- Once the correct Text: and URL: information has been entered either automatically or manually, click on the [Save] button to save your changes and return to the main Menu Manager screen
- When you click [Save], the addition of your new menu item will be confirmed, and the new item will appear at the bottom of your selected menu.
- If you prefer to return to the main menu manager screen without saving your new menu item, click [Cancel].
3.9.3.2 Opening a Menu Item (to review or edit)
If you want to open an existing menu item to review or edit it, highlight the menu item you wish to open and click [Open].
The Menu Item Details box will open. Here you can
- Change what the menu item is called by typing in a new name in the Text: area.
- Select (or change) which page the menu item links to by choosing it from the drop down list, or by entering a specific URL directly in the URL: text field.
- Once you have completed editing your menu item click [Save] to save your changes and return to the main Menu Manager screen
- To return to the main menu manager screen without saving your changes, click [Cancel].
3.9.3.3 Deleting a Menu Item
To delete an existing menu or sub menu item,
- Navigate to the appropriate menu using the Menu: drop down list.
- Within the selected menu, highlight the item you wish to delete from the text box area
- Click [Delete] near the top right side of the screen.
- You will be prompted to confirm your action by clicking OK.
- The deletion of the selected menu item will then be confirmed and it will be removed from the list of menu items.
3.9.3.4 Moving a Menu Item Up or Down Within a Menu or Submenu
To move a menu item up or down within a menu or submenu,
- Highlight it and then click the [Up] or [Down] button accordingly (located near the top right corner of your screen).
- The selected menu item will move up or down one position each time you click.
Note: menu items can not be moved from one menu or submenu to another using the move function. To move an item from one menu (or submenu) to another, you will have to delete it from one and add it to the other.
3.9.3.4 Adding a Sub Menu
Once you have confirmed that your website design supports sub menus, you can add a sub- menu to any of your main menu items. To do so,
- Select the main menu item you wish to add the sub menu to from the drop down list.
- It will then appear as the selected menu, and any sub menu items will appear in the box below
- From here, click on [New] and proceed as you would to add a menu item as described above.
- Once you have finished adding sub menu items, click [Up a Level] beside the Menu: drop down list to return to the menu one level above, or navigate back to the Main Menu using the drop down list.
When you have finished with the Menu Manager, you can return to the Site Content screen by clicking the Return to Site Content link in the bottom left corner of your screen, or by clicking the Site Content icon in your menu bar.
